I don't know about other evolutionary frameworks, but I think this
characterisation is a bit limited for biogeography where evolutionary
models of spatial history have led to predictions about geological
structures in the modern world that were unknown to geologists, but later
identified though geological research. This is a case where a theoretical
model predicted an empirical fact. So perhaps there is more potential in
evolutionary theory than just one model to another.
