My gosh.  If orthogenesis as defined by Mayr, Stanley, Gould, etc. etc. is
not what they say it means, who has used the term "properly?"  And what is
the appropriate term for the concept of evolution internally directed
toward a particular goal?

The concept of constraints canalizing evolutionary possibilities is
precisely the opposite of what these guys were talking about.
