Doug Yanega's comments certainly gave me pause. Paleontologists commonly
use subspecies to distinguish different stratigraphic stages within a
lineage. The concept of the subspecies is here based on the practicality of
distinguishing forms that differ little but are useful in recognizing
narrow slices of time in the geologic record. Obviously, "subspecies" means
something different to a paleontologist than to a neontologist (our term
for a biologist who studies living animals).
A linear relationship among taxa is not easily incorporated into cladistic
programs, is it?
