Gurcharan is right in that speciation may not always be instantaneous, but
it should be remembered that adaptive differentiation assumes a multitude
of manifestations, and may only rarely be associated with the arisal of a
new taxon with an evolutionary future beyond that of the original
population. In other words, most subspecies, semispecies, varieties, or
whatever you wish are terminal clades, well suited to their odd little
station in life but going nowhere in particular via their progeny.
