The glossary at the back of my HTML "bible" ("Foundations of World Wide Web
Programming with HTML & CGI" by Tittel, Gaither, Hassinger, & Erwin)
defines "markup" as "a special form of text embedded in a document that
describes elements of document structure, layout, presentation, or delivery".
