Though it is exclusively botanical, I think Tod Stuessy's "Plant Taxonomy:
The Systematic Evaluation of Comparative Data" (1990) and companion exercise
book "Case Studies in Plant Taxonomy" (1994) are excellent for a principles
and (botanical) methods course, emphasizing kinds of data and their analysis.
