I'm sorry, I misunderstood the original question. I didn't realize that
Johm Steel was interested in the ligule of the *particular* Selaginella
that was studied. I though he was instead asking about the *general* ligule
that is present in some form or another in all the Selaginellopsida and
Isoetopsida, a diverse group that contains aquatic organisms and large
(extinct) trees. Certainly if the same structural features were found in
all other extant ligulate lycopods, that would be significant to the latter
(and apparently unasked) question. Until that is established, though, it
would seem that I'm not the only one without a clue.
