Mark Metz, a grad student in our lab, said that electric fences were being
used around malaise traps in the Smokies and they have reportedly had no
further problems with bears or loss. Mark mentioned someone named
Pickering(?) was doing this work. Hope this helps and maybe someone else
has better details.
Good luck!

P.S. Just realized when I didn't see my response among the others that it
didn't go to the list but directly to Carolyn. Because I don't know the
details of the method suggested, I'm reposting it to the group.
