Many people on the Unicode email list, while agreeing that Unicode should
last "forever", seem to feel that XML will only be around another decade or
so.

I've said before and I'll say again that electronic publication is possible
*now* if paper copies are also distributed to a few libraries. Both paper
and electronic have their advantages. There is no reason we should restrict
ourselves to one or the other.
