Workshop: Handheld Computing in the Field

FINAL CALLS FOR CONTRIBUTIONS AND PARTICIPATION

Following the success of the one-day conference held at the University
of Kent, UK in 1997, we announce a one-day workshop on handheld
computing in fieldwork to be held as part of the International Symposium
on Handheld and Ubiquitous Computing (HUC99) in Karlsruhe, Germany,
27-29th September, 1999.

The scope of the workshop is interdisciplinary, it aims to bring
together people with an interest in technology-based support for
fieldwork activities, including:

+ Ecologists, environmental scientists, archaeologists, surveyors
and others interested in gathering, re-using, or obtaining access
to high quality data in the field, and
+ Computer scientists and engineers interested in the particular
challenges which the fieldwork environment present to
  computer-based applications.

The workshop will include a mixture of invited papers, contributed
papers, posters and demonstrations. Topics will include, but will not
be limited to:

+ Current trends in hand-held data collection and information access.
+ Supporting collaborative fieldwork by teams of researchers.
+ Context-Awareness and Environment-Mediated Communication.
+ Communications and ad hoc networking in the field.
+ New technologies for capturing and monitoring environmental
  and contextual information.

Contributions
=============

Contributed papers, posters and demonstrations are now sought in
these and other areas. In particular, those describing field workers'
experiences of using the above technologies to support fieldwork are
particularly welcomed. Papers describing work in progress are also
welcome.

Please submit an abstract to Nick Ryan at the address below by 31st July
1999. Abstracts should be a maximum of four pages, including figures and
tables. Abstracts of papers to be presented at the workshop will be
published in a technical report that will be made available at the
workshop. We are currently in negotiation with a publisher over
producing an edited volume based on the contributions to this and the
1997 workshop. Further details of this book will be announced as and
when it becomes available.
