Katydid CD ROM = Copyright issues

Yes, copyright of type images is a sticky issue. In the case of images
taken in the Natural History Museum in London the museum retains the
copyright of them (even though we took them) but agreed for us to publish
them. That's why each image in our database that originated there has a
copyright notice stating that the copyright holder is the museum in
London.
But I absolutely agree that types and images of them should not be
subject to copyright laws as they represent, in a sense, scientific DATA,
and as such, cannot be copyrighted. Unless you treat them as objects of
art, but if that's the case, let's start charging museums for those
objects just like artists do.
Sorry about the price of our CD ROM. However, we put A LOT of time and
effort into producing it, plus a great deal of personal financial
investment.
