The following two positions have now been officially advertised and have an
application deadline of 1 August. Formal position announcements, with
application instructions, are attached as MS Word 5.1 (for Mac) documents.
Postdoctoral Associate
A 2-year postdoctoral research associate position will be available
starting August 1999 to work on co-phylogeny between polydnaviruses (PDVs)
and microgastrine braconid wasps, using DNA sequence data from both wasps
and associated viruses. This work, funded by the National Science
Foundation, will be conducted in the laboratory of Drs. James B. Whitfield
and Sydney A. Cameron in the Department of Entomology, University of
Arkansas, Fayetteville. The successful applicant should have experience in
DNA sequencing and sequence analysis, as well as either phylogenetic
analysis or polydnavirus biology. Other work going on in the lab concerns
phylogenetic analysis of braconid wasps and of social bees.
Research Associate - Collection Manager, Arthropod Museum, University of
Arkansas
A full-time permanent research associateship will be available
starting August 1999 in the Department of Entomology, University of
Arkansas. Responsibilities of the position include serving as collection
manager for the University of Arkansas Arthropod Museum, and contributing
to systematics research in the museum and in the Insect Molecular
Systematics laboratory adjacent to the museum. Provision of a limited
number of arthropod identifications will also be expected to serve the
Entomology Department and other clientele within the state. A graduate
degree in entomological systematics is expected, and experience with either
computer databasing and/or analysis of systematic data (or both) would be
desirable. Salary is expected to start in the $28,000-30,000 range plus
benefits. The University and Museum are located in the Ozark Plateau, with
excellent local opportunities for fieldwork and outdoor recreation.
Current ongoing research in the museum and systematics laboratory
focuses on phylogenetic systematics, ecology and behavior of braconid
parasitoid wasps and of the corbiculate bees (Apinae). The current museum
website is: http://www.uark.edu/depts/entomolo/museum/museum.html.
