You must already have had Word, but I imagine that you, or somebody in your

In the US, universities were ordinarily connected electronically before the
phone companies got into the act. Some even own their own pieces of the
network, and charge phone companies for use. The internet is a natural
competitor to phone companies, and it is understandable, and regrettable,
that they would want to take control of it.
