'Nemosia rourei,' the Cherry-throated Tanager, Rediscovered
This rare and threatened species was rediscovered in February 1998, after
almost 50 years without records in nature. The place where it was found -
the only one where it is known to occur up to this moment, in all world- is
Fazenda Pindobas IV, in the municipality of Concei=E7=E3o do Castelo,=
southern
Esp=EDrito Santo, Brazil, covered with Umbrofilous vegetation, at an average
of 1,000m elevation.
This property belongs to 'Itapemirim Corp.' and is used as a Pinnus
plantation. But there is almost 1,200 ha of native, untouched forest. Until
now, 20 species of mammals were registered at Pindobas (5 of which are
threatened) and nearly 250 species of birds, including 7 threatened species,
24 endemic to
eastern Brazil and 1 endemic to Esp=EDrito Santo.
Research done in this area is providing support for the creation of an
important private biological reserve (or a "RPPN - Reserva Particular do
Patrim=F4nio Natural"), but this should be done as soon as possible, if the
forested area, and its species, are to be preserved.
The area has been visited by researchers and other groups from all over the
world. It is an excellent place to conduct field work and scientific
research, and has also attracted activities of eco-tourism in function of
its abundance of bird, mammal and reptile species.
Researchers interested in developping field work in this area may be
provided with transportation, food, and accomodation. Aditional information
can be asked through the e-mail sairaap at zaz.com.br or orignat at zaz.com.br
Yours,
Pedro R. de Paz & Ana C. Venturini
