Dr. Cynthia M. Morton

 Auburn University Herbarium seeks a full-time curator. This is a
professional job responsible to provide curatorial management for the
University Herbarium.  The position is to maintain collections and data
bases at national standards which includes, but not limited to
identifying, accessioning, cataloguing, maintaining, and preserving of
collections, along with data basing field-notes and other associated
records and documentation. To build and improve collections and data
bases.  To supervise volunteer helpers and work study students.  To
facilitate the extractions of DNA for selected specimens. Provide public
tours and to assist teachers, students and visiting researchers.  The
Auburn University Herbarium contains about 60,000 specimens of flowering
plants and pteridophtytes, about 1000 specimens of bryophytes and
lichens, and about 3000 specimens of fungi, with emphasis on the
Deuteromycetes.  This herbarium is the largest one in Alabama being
richest in specimens from central portions of the state.  The collection
houses valuable historic specimens dating to the nineteenth century
including those of E. F.  Andrews, A. W. Chapman, and W. Wolf.  Auburn
University Herbarium is regarded as the State Herbarium for Alabama.
The position requires basic computer literacy and experience with plant
identification. Entry into the applicant pool requires a 4-year college
degree in botany or biology;  however a Master's degree is desired.
Experience in a herbarium setting and database management skills are
also desired. Screening of applications will begin May 1, 1999 and will
