AFRICAN REGIONAL POSTGRADUATE
PROGRAMME IN INSECT SCIENCE (ARPPIS)

DOCTORAL TRAINING FELLOWSHIPS

Applications are invited for 3-year doctoral training fellowships tenable at
the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) under the
African Regional Postgraduate Programme in Insect Science (ARPPIS).
Prospective candidates should specify one or more (in order of preference) of
the following thesis research topics for which they should be considered.
1.            Partial niche partitioning and complementarity of stem borer
(Lepidoptera: Noctuidae, pyralidae)                          parasitization by
Cotesia sesamiae Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and Sturmiopsis parasitica
(Curran) (Diptera: Tachinidae) and mechanisms of seasonal carryover in unimodal
rainfall climatic zones as typified by Zimbabwe (a national of Zimbabwe will be
preferred)
2.      Evaluation of selected predatory mites for augumentative biological
control of Red Spider Mites
3.      Exploration for and assessment of the local pathogens of indigenous
African fruit flies, Ceratitis cosyra and C. rosa, and prospects for their use
to manage immature and adult stages of fruit flies
4.      The behavioral ecology of two indigenous African fruit flies, Ceratitis
cosyra and C. rosa, and its implication for strategies and tactics of fruit fly
management in Africa
5.      Optimisation of use of phenylacetonitrile in enhancing
susceptibility of
gregarious nymphal desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria (Forsk.) to
insecticides
and pathogens
6.      Relative oviposition preferences of solitarious Desert Locusts on
different Heliotropium spp. and their semiochemical basis
7.      Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) pollination and risk assessment linked
to the
future release of genetically
transformed cowpea breeding lines (project will be partly based in Sudan)
8.      Ecological monitoring and sustainable utilization of butterflies at
Arabuko-Sokoke forest, Kenya
9.      Biosystematics of Psyttalia species complex (Hym.: Braconidae),
parasitoids of Tephritidae
10.     Investigations on the pollination ecology of the honey bee Apis
mellifera on chosen crops of economic importance
11.     Evaluation of the marketing strategy for honey and bee-hive products in
East Africa
12.     Assessment of vectorial capacity of Anophiline Mosquitoes for Malaria
13.     The plant alternative: Use of East African plant products as
insecticides on bed nets and as alternatives to synthetic insecticides for
personal protection against malaria vectors
14.     Optimization of the use of repellents for management of Tsetse -
Glossina peallidipes and Trypanosomosis

Applicants should be nationals of African countries, aged 35 years or below,
with minimum qualifications of B.Sc second class upper division and a good
masters degree in a relevant field taken with both graduate-level course work
and thesis.  French equivalents of these qualifications will be accepted.
(Those who submitted applications earlier should write to indicate project(s)
of their choice).  Candidates must submit the following documents (incomplete
applications will not be considered):

(a) Updated CV with evidence of age,  (b) Copies of course transcripts for the
B. Sc and M. Sc courses,
(c) Certified copies of the B. Sc and M. Sc Certificates,  (d) Abstract of the
masters thesis,  (e) Letter of recommendation from at least two academic
referees,  (f) Letter from the employer guaranteeing the candidate full
time studentship,  (g) Letter from a university willing to enroll the candidate
on the Ph.D programme.

Selected candidates will be offered fellowships to cater for university fees,
international travel, research costs, stipend and medical/life insurance cover
for self. The training programme will start with a mandatory, 3-month
coursework in June/July 1999.
