The following programs are specially designed for mapping Fauna or
Flora:

1. CARTO FAUNA FLORA (CFF) by Barbier & Rasmont (Mons, Belgium).

http://panoramix.umh.ac.be/zoologie/cff/cff_en.html

It is cheap, DOS-based with Windows shell and comes with a number of
outline maps, including wordmaps which can be zoomed to about the size
of single countries. Distributions are printed from simple files with
coordinates (long-lat or UTM, or others: transformation routine
included). Output are eps files which can be viewed outside the program
by, i.e. Ghostview.

The homepage gives examples of papers illustrated by means of CFF.

2. DMAP by Alan Morton

I have seen very good results with it, but have no personal experience.
It is also relatively cheap.
This program is frequently used in Britain.
