To me, a botanical garden and herbarium would be mutually beneficial.  I
believe that a serious garden would want to document its plants (and their
different stages) by means of pressed collections.  An herbarium with a
good sampling of relevant species (such as horticultural taxa) would assist
identification of specimens in the living collections and faciliatate
comparisons.  On the other hand, I think it's great to have a nearby garden
or arboretum to visit to complement the herbarium with 3 dimensional and
life history aspects of plants.
