The University of Kansas Natural History Museum and Biodiversity Research
Center, located in Lawrence, is seeking expressions of interest for a
Postdoctoral opportunity in the area of biodiversity informatics.

The Informatics Department is interested in hosting a postdoctoral
researcher with a degree in computer science, environmental or organismic
biology to engage in informatics research in the area of biological
collections database systems, metadata standards for specimen, taxon and
classification data, networked information retrieval protocols,
visualization technologies for biological classification trees, or in other
related areas of biodiversity data modelling, information retrieval,
analysis or visualization. Research related to the technical development
of the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) or to the standards
efforts of the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) would
also be of interest. Our research and development interests are
broadly-based in the above areas. These URLs point to some recent projects
and activities:

A postdoctoral position would be contingent on funding though NSF's Program
"Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biological Informatics" (
http://www.nsf.gov/cgi-bin/getpub?nsf98162 ) which has a submission
deadline of December 11, 1998. Please see the Program Announcement for
eligibility requirements which include but are not limited to: (1) citizen
or permanent resident alien of the U.S., and (2) doctoral degree no earlier
than December 1, 1996, and no later than September 1, 1999. NSF Fellowship
Awards are made directly to the individual for a 24 month period. The
stipend is $50,000 per year with additional allowances (see the Program
Announcement for details).

We will review e-mail expressions of interest for goodness-of-fit with our
in-house expertise and initiatives and begin a dialogue with the most
suitable candidate on project ideas and on the scope of a Postdoctoral
Fellowship program which would be primarily self-directed and aimed at
providing research experience and training for the individual in the area
of biodiversity informatics.

If you are interested and if you meet the eligibility requirements of the
NSF program, please e-mail Jim Beach at the address below with a brief
statement of research interests and a brief resume or summary of your
computational and biological training background.
