        JUST PUBLISHED:

The Freshwater Molluscs of The Netherlands

         E. Gittenberger & A.W. Janssen (Eds.)

Last week a new book on the Freshwater Molluscs of The
Netherlands, composed by seven authors and an illustrator, was
published. It is the second volume of a new series on the Dutch fauna
('Nederlandse Fauna'). Although it may seem of local interest only
(written in Dutch), there are some aspects which make it of interest for
a wider audience.
* The book deals with ca. 80 recent species, but also treats all
quaternary species, including the 34 extinct species. Nomenclature and
taxonomy are up-to-date.
* The shells of all species are shown in detailed pencil drawings
of very high quality, all made by Gijs Peeters. They are an excellent
help in identification
* All the known illustrations of egg-cases are brought together
for the first time.
* Colour plates show the species in their biotopes, often with
beautifull underwater photographs by Willem Kolvoort
* The distribution of each recent species is shown in 2 maps of
The Netherlands: one prior to 1970, one 1970-1997.
* There is a complete checklist.
* The book has an extensive list of references.
* There is a 2 page English summary.

        From the summary:
Recent and fossil molluscs from fresh- and brackish waters
For the first time, this book provides identification keys for
all Dutch freshwater molluscs, including fossil Pleistocene species. In
addition, maps on the basis of a 5 km square grid, give a picture of
distribution and change of faunal composition. The book deals with 82
indigenous species, 4 non-indigenous species and 33 fossil species. Some
species show a severe decline, such as Mercuria confusa, Myxas
glutinosa, Omphiscola glabra, Unio crassus, while others are markedly
expanding or even recent additions to the fauna, such as Potamopyrgus
antipodarum, Corbicula fluminalis and C. fluminea.
