Index Nominum Supragenericorum Plantarum Vascularium Update
A new version of the dynamic database on suprageneric names for vascular
plants is now available at
http://matrix.nal.usda.gov:8080/star/supragenericname.html and will be
updated frequently insofar as I have time to work on the information. The
Index Nominum Supragenericorum Plantarum Vascularium Project is supported by
the International Association for Plant Taxonomy and the Norton-Brown
Herbarium of the University of Maryland. The data are preliminary. The
database is being constantly changed so that any name listed is only the
earliest valid and legitimate name found to date. Names at and above the
rank of family (except suborder) are up-to-date, but names at the rank of
suborder and those below the rank of family are incomplete with only names
proposed prior to 1893 listed to date.
Additional information on vascular plant families is available. A
concordance of flowering plant family names is also available. The data in
this dynamic database generally are more up-to-date that those found in the
list of names arranged by genus or the list of names arranged by family.
Information of Cronquist, Takhtajan and Thorne's systems of classification
are available through Flowering Plant Gateway.

As of 12 Nov 1998 there were just over 6000 suprageneric names available. It
is expected that progress will slow during the Spring 1999 semester, but
hopefully resume during the summer months.
