I recall several years ago finding a protologue published
in 1906, in which the description was interrupted
in mid-sentence with the words "To Be Continued." The
description was finished in the subsequent issue,
published a month later.
As I was still a graduate student at the time, I asked
my professor on how to cite this and how to calculate
priority. He replied that basionym citation is intended to
give reference to the name only, not the entire protologue.
Thus I should cite only the page on which the name first
appeared. The appearance of even a partial description on
that page was enough to satisfy priority for the date on
which that page was published.
