support our rapidly expanding biodiversity informatics operations -- including
a major upcoming database web site of species and ecological community

TITLE: Internet Services Specialist
SUPERVISOR: Internet Services Manager
LOCATION: Home Office, Arlington, Virginia, The Nature Conservancy

SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Internet Services Specialist administers internet services systems that
support the scientific mission
of The Nature Conservancy. Implementation and ongoing support for Unix
servers, in direct support of the
Internet Services Manager are primary duties of the position. S/he configures
hardware and software
relating to Internet standards-based services, regularly reviews logs and
remains current in
state-of-the-art techniques for effective technical site management. Key
Internet services supported by this
position includes Web, FTP and mailing lists. S/he works as part of a team of
professionals that provide
technical site management for a major new public endangered species and
ecosystems bioinformatics
web site that will provide 20 years worth of accumulated information on-line.
In addition, a number of
on-going Internet services support a national network of biologists (an
extranet) that collaboratively work
to catalog and disseminate information on endangered species and ecosystems as
well as the more general
Conservancy public outreach in the scientific area. The specialist supervises
no staff and reports to the
Internet Services Manager.
1.The specialist supports the operational and administrative functions for
Internet/Extranet/Intranet
servers, monitoring and ensuring reliable network access. Install
applications and updates frequently
to improve the server performance, usability and reliability.
2.The specialist is responsible for the systems and network support of
collaborative (back-end)
Internet-based services. These include Web, FTP and mailing lists.
3.Working closely with the Central Databases staff, facilitate the
scientific data exchange process
using Internet technologies (i.e., FTP and Web).
4.Work closely with moderators of scientific discussion mailing lists to
help facilitate scientific
collaboration.
5.Responsible for the security monitoring of Internet services to prevent
and respond to system
intrusion. Implement a proactive approach to computer security by
participating in related mailing
lists and news groups.
6.Write shell/batch scripts or programs to automate systems administration
tasks and enhance
system-monitoring capability.
7.Write technical systems documentation.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
1.BA/BS degree. Computer Science, Physics, Math, MIS or Biological Science
concentration is
preferred.
2.1-2 years of systems administration experience is required.
3.Unix experience is required and Windows NT experience is a plus.
4.Unix Shell scripting and/or PERL experience is required. Knowledge of "C"
is a plus.
5.Experience in writing technical systems documentation is required.
6.Hands-on experience and familiarity with Web, FTP and mailing list
services is required.
7.Ability to write and speak clearly to technical audiences.
8.Knowledge of the Microsoft Office application software suite is a plus.
9.Ability to work independently and an interest in learning new applications
and technologies are
required.
10.Commitment to the mission of The Nature Conservancy is required.
