monocot/dicots

Dear all,
I am looking for a general reference to recommend to
K-12 teachers that will help explain the current views on
the early lineages of flowering plants and how water lilies
and such fit in. I also get questions such as the
standard if not all dicots have two cotyledons
and not all monocots have parallel veins and not
all flowers etc etc, then how and why are the two
groups distinguished? [Is it important to recognize these
two groups as something special anyway?] I can explain things
readily enough in the classroom but I get many requests for
a reference that they can take home and that is on a more
general public level rather than a college text. Any help?
Anita
