PHD STUDENTSHIP IN POLLINATION EVOLUTIONARY ECOLOGY AT THE GENEVA BOTANICAL
GARDEN, SWITZERLAND

A PhD studentship is available to work in a multidisplinary team with Dr
Vincent Savolainen (Geneva Bot Gard/Univ Lausanne), Dr Alain Chautems
(Geneva Bot Gard) and Prof. Rodolphe Spichiger (Geneva Bot Gard/Univ) on a
project examining the evolution of plant pollination systems (insigths from
molecular phylogenetics, field data, nectar chemistry, etc. in Neotropical
Gesneriaceae - these plants being pollinated by a wide range of animals
incl. bees, moths, butterflies, birds and bats). The PhD student will be in
charge of studying the correlation between pollination syndromes and
effective pollinators, we expect that s-he will be able to set up
experimental designs to be compared with field data, and that s-he will
develop ecological models to be tested.
This studentship is funded by the Swiss NSF at the rate of 91000 Swiss
Francs for 3 years. The position is available from August 1998; foreigners
are eligible to apply. Preference will be given for well trained applicants
in theoretical ecology with experience in pollination biology.
To apply, please send as soon as possible covering letter, full CV, and 2
sealed letters of recommendation to Dr V. Savolainen, Conservatoire et
Jardin botaniques, CP 60, CH-1292 Chambesy, Geneva, Switzerland.
