Image analysis

A colleague has requested info for a general purpose image analysis
system.  I currently use MorphoSys and am familiar with SigmaScanPro
(formerly Jandel, now SPSS).  The system needs to be versatile to enough
to allow data capture, etc. from a variety of biological and museum
specimens.  While price is not necessarily critical, he's looking for
something more reasonable than the $20K figure quoted by an Americam firm.

Anyone have any recommendations?
