Value/Cost of Collections

          For deep-sea collections--or any off-shore collecting, water
          column or benthos--the cost of a research vessel is around
          $20,000 per day or more.  Added to this is the more recent
          problem of getting permission to collect within the 200-mile
          economic zone of each country bordering the oceans, which
          permissions can be denied if there is a hint of designs for
          exploitation or military intelligence.
