Sorry to have broken this into two pieces.

Hugh Wilson is, of course, absolutely correct about the computational
context and its requirements on information of all kinds.  But I
don't think that computational availability requires a concept
of validity that centers on registration.  Combining and centralizing
data can occur without registration.
