Floating Islands

Hiya:

Many years ago I heard of some sort of unit within the Smithsonian Institutions
in charge of garnering data on living things collected in so-called floating islands. I have never been able to track this info down and people at the Natural
History Museum (Washington, DC) with whom I have talk appear not to recognize
that such unit has ever been there. ANy light most welcomed.
