I just got a response asking which abdominal segments had styli, and
whether there are styli on the coxae. Having only the photo, I can say that
all the abdominal segments have styli (they are definitely not just
eversible sacs), and not just segments 7-9. I cannot tell about the coxae.
None of my reference material says Thysanura ever have styli on all the
abdominal segments, though it is also true that nowhere is the possibility
explicitly *excluded*. There is one photo of a Nicoletiid on the web, but
it is a dorsal view, so I cannot see if there are abdominal styli. Maybe
they *do* have them, and none of the Borror et al. books ever mention it;
in a case like this, one is limited by one's references. I guess I'm also
just a bit surprised that with at least around 50 web pages discussing
Apterygota, apparently not a single one has keys to families.
