Doctoral training fellowships in entomology for African nationals

ANNOUNCEMENT - DOCTORAL TRAINING FELLOWSHIPS

Applications are invited for 3-year  doctoral training  fellowships tenable at
ICIPE under the  African Regional Postgraduate Programme in Insect Science
(ARPPIS).  Prospective candidates should specify one or more of the following
thesis research topics for which they should be considered:

1.Studies on bioecology and environmentally sound control of red spider Mites
on tomato in Kenya
2.Comparison of biology, behaviour and chemical communication among pan
African
populations of Busseola fusca Fuller (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).
3.Bioefficacy and non-target interaction of neem formulations in control of
key
pests of Frenchbean and Snowpeas.
4.Physiological and genetic diversity in the populations of the larval
parasitoid C. sesemiae.
5.Impact of farmer participation on technology, adoption and diffusion: An
assessment of a collaborative project in Trans Nzoia, Kenya, on the use of
fodder host plants for the control of stem borers in maize
6.Effects of semiochemicals on maturation of the solitarious desert locust
Schistocerca gregaria (Forskal) - (Required: MSc. Entomology/Chemistry)
7.Statistical significance tests of inferential statistics in entomological
studies

8.Assessment of impacts of land use activities on indicator insect assemblages
in the  Taita Hills Forest Complex
9.Optimization of parasitoid release strategy against cereal stemborers in
Ethiopia. (Nationals of Ethiopia preferred)
10.Bio-ecological studies of red spider mite of tomato in Zimbabwe. (Nationals
of Zimbabwe preferred)
11.Molecular characterization of the factors involved in the development of
trypanosomes in tsetse midgut.
Applicants should be nationals of African countries, aged 35 years or below,
with minimum qualifications of Bsc second class upper division and a good
masters degree in a relevant field taken with both graduate-level course-work
and thesis.  French equivalents of these qualifications will be accepted.
(Those who submitted applications earlier should write to indicate project(s)
of their choice).  Candidates must submit the following (incomplete
applications will not be considered):

(a) Updated CV with evidence of age, (b) Copies of course transcripts for the
B.Sc. and M.Sc courses, (c) Certified copies of the B.Sc and Msc.
Certificates,
(d) Abstract of the masters thesis,
(e) Letter of recommendation from at least two academic referees, (f) Letter
from the employer guaranteeing the candidate  full time studentship, (g)
Letter
from a university willing to enroll the candidate on the PhD programme.

Applications should reach the undersigned  not later than March 31, 1998
