The Gulf Coast Research Laboratory is pleased to announce that a
website dealing with imperiled species in the Gulf of Mexico and its
coastal habitats is available for use. This site can be found at=20
http://www.ims.usm.edu/~musweb/endanger.html. This work was
sponsored through a cooperative agreement between the US Gulf of Mexico
Program administered by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the
Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, working in conjunction with numerous
scientists from other institutions.=20
The site presents the results of a workshop on the identification of
potentially endangered species in the Gulf and efforts to establish the
research needs for these species. Detailed information is presented for
78 species, with an additional 215 candidate species, the status of
which are unknown or have yet to be adequately investigated.=20
Information for fishes is most complete and includes nearly all US and
Canadian archival records, as well as historical distribution maps
generated from these records. Also included is a fairly extensive
bibliographic file on endangered species and related topics, with more
than 8,750 citations, most focusing on species and habitats in the Gulf
of Mexico and associated drainages.
While we expect that the information presented is of value in
conserving these species, we recognize that our efforts are but a small
part of much further work that will be needed to ultimately assure a
future for these species.=20
At this time, we would particularly welcome comments, suggestions for
improvement of the site, and additional information, including links to
other relevant information. These will be helpful to us in improving
the usefulness of the site to future researchers, as well as an
educational tool. Persons with knowledge of related sites or on line
sources of information are urged to contact us so that appropriate links
can be included. Our URL databases are at an early stage of
construction, so related URL's will be particularly helpful.

Since most of these species are rare and poorly studied, we would
especially appreciate help in locating photographs of the
following species that could be freely displayed on these pages. Credit
is given for all photographs so made available. We would also like at
this time to acknowledge the considerable help of many in the
systematics and wildlife management communities who have greatly
assisted in this effort, as well as the support of the Gulf of Mexico
Program.
