I think the following taxonomy of museum designations
might be useful.
DESIGNON = code used to refer to a biological museum
VOXONYM = designon pronounceable as a word
LITTERONYM = designon which must be spelled out in speech
ACRONYM = voxonym based on the first letter
or first few letters of each word in the name
of the institution, e.g. USON from
Universidad de Sonora
BREVONYM = one word of the institution's name,
or a shortening thereof, e.g. AMES or
TEX for University of Texas
ALIOVOXONYM = voxonym drawn from source other than the
institution's name, e.g. KIRI.
INSTITUTOLITTERONYM = litteronym
based on the initials of the institution's name,
e.g. GH or LSU
ALIOLITTERONYM = litteronym based on a source
other than the name of the institution. Sorry,
but I cannot think of an example.
