FIFTH MEETING OF Ph.D STUDENTS IN EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY

24-26 March 1999, Umea, Sweden

We have already received about 40 applications and that number is
constantly increasing. We would like to give some more information about
the 5th meeting, and remind those of you which have not registered yet to
do so.

First of all, if you want to make a budget for your stay here in Umea, see
our homepage for prices. The prices there might change as we still are
trying to get better deals. That means that the prices might become lower
but never higher. Hopefully some of the costs will be reduced to zero :)

Secondly, it will be winter here in March. Probably the weather will be
nice and the temperature just below freezing. However, it can be as cold as
-15 degrees Celsius (5 degrees Fahrenheit) and there will definitely be a
lot of snow. So bring warm shoes and clothes. You will not need your
swimsuit here.

Those of you who are thinking of applying for travel grants from us, please
do so as soon as possible. We still don=92t know how many we will be able to
sponsor, but the sooner we get your applications the better are our chances
of getting the money.

Don=92t forget to visit our homepage (http://www.umu.se/genetik/Mintro.htm)
regularly. We are updating it as soon as we get new information. Also
register to our mailing list. We will from now on send all new information
on the mailing list (and of course also on the homepage). Remember that
registering on the mailing list is not the same thing as registering to the
meeting. If you already have registered to the meeting please also register
to the mailing list. We can not add persons to the mailing list, you have
to do that yourself.

Because of the size of the lecture halls for the meeting we have limited
the number of participants to 140. The number of speakers we have limited
to 100. We will give priority to students giving talks. People giving no
presentation at all will be accepted if there are less than 140 persons
registered for presentations. If there will be more than 140 registrations
in total the ones that registered last will be removed first. See the
homepage for the current number of participants.

Due to the big interest from students outside of Europe we have decided to
accept registrations from non Europeans also. However, the travel grants
will only be available for Europeans.

Finally, the organising committee would like to welcome you to Umea (note
that there should be a small circle above the =94a=94 in Umea) and to 5th
Meeting for PhD Students in Evolutionary Biology (which we know will be a
great meeting).

Cya in March,

The organising committee
