New flat files of suprageneric names are now available. One may find names
arranged by genera at http://www.inform.umd.edu/PBIO/fam/inspvindex.html or
by families at http://www.inform.umd.edu/PBIO/fam/sgindex.html. The dynamic
files - updated weekly when worked on - are more up-to-date and may be found
at http://matrix.nal.usda.gov:8080/star/supragenericname.html.
The current listing include those names that were validly published (so far
as found) up to 1900. The Engler and Prantl names have been entered as if my
proposal to validate the names proposed for consideration at the next
Botanical Congress has been approved. The proposal allows the rankless names
below the rank to tribe to be considered validly published at the rank of
subtribe. Other aspects of names mentioned in Engler & Prantl are also
treated in the proposal so as to allow the traditional application of the
names to continue in use. - See Taxon 47: 183-192. 1998.
It is expected that little progress will be made after 1 Jan 1999.
