While it is true that the mother's genetic contribution is slightly
higher than the father's (and how slight does depend on whether the
child is male or female), I think the exact percentage isn't very
important. What is important is that some of the genes involved are
important both genetically and medically, even though they may be
relatively small in numbers. Of course, there can also be a tendency to
overexaggerate their importance as well, and the controversy over
humanity's "genetic" Eve, and how far back one must go to find her.
*****Quite frankly I think there are much more important matters to
study, although it is a subject of natural anthropocentric interest.
Some academic debates just aren't worth losing any sleep over,
especially since there are areas of debate that are relatively ignored
just because they are far more difficult to think about and discuss in
any meaningful way. I always have hope for the New Year, and that
biology will take some of those issues more seriously. We shall see.
