Dr. Gordon Gunter

I regret to announce that Dr. Gordon Gunter, a former director of the
Gulf Coast Research Laboratory died on Saturday, Dec. 19th.  His funeral
will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21, at the First Baptist Church
in Ocean Springs.

Dr. Gunter, a widely respected marine biologist, whose publications
included taxonomy and systematics of fishes and invertebrates recently
had a large NOAA research vessel named in his honor.  Dr. Gunter will
long be remembered as a pioneer in investigations of the marine biology
of the Gulf of Mexico and as an able administrator (1955-1971), who was
largely responsible for greatly expanding the Gulf Coast Research
Laboratory from a field station into a major marine laboratory.
