</B><P>The University=92s traditions go back to the late nineteenth centu=
ry when local initiatives established schools of science and art in Readi=
ng. After a generation as a University College the University received it=
s Royal Charter in 1926. Development at the 300 acres Whiteknights (main)=
 campus began in 1954 and continues over forty years later.</P>
<P>The Centre for Plant Diversity &amp; Systematics is a component of the=
 School of Plant Sciences on the Whiteknights campus. The Centre is a foc=
al group in the NERC Taxonomy Initiative and houses the secretariats for =
the<B> ILDIS World Database of Legumes</B>, <B>Species 2000: indexing the=
 world=92s known species</B>, and the new <B>EuroMed PlantBase</B> descen=
dant from <B>Flora Europaea</B>.</P>

<FONT SIZE=3D2 COLOR=3D"BLACK"><B><P>THEME</P></FONT>
</B><P>This is a short training course for those involved in developing s=
pecies diversity information systems that contain a baseline species list=
 or taxonomic framework. It is designed for biologists and project/databa=
se organisers and does not assume or require programming skills. The syst=
ems discussed may encompass plants, animals, fungi or micro-organisms.</P=
>
<P>Four major themes are addressed:</P>

<LI>How to organise the taxonomic core of a species diversity information=
 system.</LI>
<LI>Species diversity data.</LI>
<LI>Species diversity database software and how to use it.</LI>
<LI>Networks and links on the Internet including the Species 2000 and Tre=
e of Life systems.</LI></OL>

This course is closely followed by the 1998 workshop =91Metadata and I=
noperability=92 of the IUBS Taxonomic Databases Working Group (TDWG). Thi=
s is open to all and further detail are available on request.

<FONT SIZE=3D4 COLOR=3D"GREEN"><B><P>FEES and BURSARIES</P></B></FONT>

The fee, including registration accommodation, breakfast, light refres=
hments and dinner is =A3371.00. It is possible that a number of NERC Burs=
aries will be available to pay the fees for several participants. If you =
wish to apply for one of these, please supply a half-page explanation of =
i) why it is appropriate for you to attend the course and ii) why it is d=
ifficult for you or your sponsor/employer to finance your attendance.

ACCOMMODATION
Accommodation will be in University Halls of Residence.

<FONT SIZE=3D3 COLOR=3D"BLACK"><B><P>TRAVEL</P></B></FONT>
<P>The University of Reading is easily accessible by road or rail and is =
close to London Heathrow International airport.</P>

Arriving by car:
From the M4. At exit 11 (A33 Reading/Basingstoke) take the mino=
r road to Earley which turns to parallel the motorway. Continue past Shir=
e Hall to the roundabout and turn left towards Reading. Continue, across =
another roundabout, to the first set of traffic lights and turn right int=
o Pepper Lane. The entrance to the University is approximately 300 metres=
 on the left. Inside the driveway at the mini-roundabout turn right. The =
entrance to the car park for the School of Plant Sciences (car park 13) i=
s on the right.

Arriving by public transport:
From London by Train. There is a frequent fast train servic=
e from London Paddington to Reading. The journey time is 23 minutes.
From London by bus. The university is served by the London Line=
 buses L2, L3 and L5 (Whiteknights campus). 
From the railway station by taxi. The university is a short jou=
rney from Reading railway station (taxi fare about =A34.00).
From the railway station by bus. Reading Transport bus services=
 12 and 20 leave the station forecourt (same side of road as station) fro=
m stop SJ, opposite the camera shop. Buses 61 and 62 leave from stop SC. =
Buses 7 and 8 also travel to the university but stop at the opposite side=
 of the Whiteknights campus from Plant Sciences. For buses 12, 20, 61 and=
 62, alight at the Pepper Lane entrance to the university. Once inside th=
e university campus, turn right at the mini-roundabout and the School of =
Plant Sciences is about 100 metres along the road, on the right.

Arriving by air:
There is a frequent Railair bus service from London=92s Heathrow A=
irport to Reading railway station and a direct train service from Gatwick=
 Airport.
