Curation of cryptogamic exsiccati

I am curious about the curation of those cryptogamic (lichen/bryophyte)
specimens which are issued as exsiccati sets. What
advantages/disadvantages exist in keeping these as an intact set, filed
separate from the general collection, versus merging them with the general
collection (filing by name of the taxon)?
Does maintaining exsiccati in numbered sequence preserve any information
associated with the set? Has information on annotation or name changes for
exsiccati been compiled as a resource for others who have received
exsiccati sets?
Thanks,
