International organization
This meeting is being organized under the auspices of the American
Society of Mammalogists (ASM), Societas Europaea Mammalogica (SEM), and
Sociedad Espanola para la Conservacion y el Estudio de los Mamiferos
(SECEM). The main goals of this Congress are to promote holarctic
mammalogy, cooperation among European and North American mammalogists,
and further the development of and cooperation among national Mammal
Societies.
Local organization
The Euro-American Mammal Congress is being organized by the University
of Santiago de Compostela (USC), through its Colleges of Biology and
Pharmacy, as well as the Consejeria de Agricultura, Ganaderia y Montes
of the local Government (Xunta de Galicia) through the medium of its
Direccion General de Montes y Medio Ambiente Natural.

. o O | MEETING LOCATION | O o .
+......................+
Technical sessions of the meeting will take place in the facilities of
the Colleges of Biology and Pharmacy of the University of Santiago de
Compostela. The city of Santiago de Compostela is the capital of the
Autonomous Region of Galicia which, located in the Northwest of the
Iberian Peninsula, is one of the territorial entities constituting the
Spanish State. Santiago is the final destination on the Road of Saint
James (Camino de Santiago), where many of the great Medi val pilgrimage
routes joined each other. As such, it early on became a site of
cultural interchange, of exchanges of ideas, and of encounters and
communication among peoples; these traditions have lasted through
history to modern times. It was precisely this intellectual fervour
that led to the creation of the University of Santiago de Compostela,
which celebrated its five hundredth anniversary in 1995. The city of
Santiago itself holds in patrimony a great historical and cultural
wealth; this has caused UNESCO to declare the city a Human Heritage
site.
Galicia also is a region of great ecological value on account of the
wealth and diversity of the ecosystems present in the region. Of
particular note are the marine, coastal, and Atlantic Montane
ecosystems, within which thrive mammalian communities of great
interest, and rich in species endemic to the Iberian peninsula.

The meeting will focus on all biological aspects of Holarctic mammals.
However, contributions of interest relating to mammals from other
regions also will be welcomed.
Contributions could be made in the form of poster or oral
presentations, and they will be grouped in General Sessions or
specialized Symposia and Workshops. Oral presentations in specialized
Symposia and Workshops mostly will be restricted to invited
presentations, although there will be space for poster contributions.
IUCN/SCC specialist group meetings are not meant for paper
presentations, unless otherwise arranged by conveners. Participants
wishing to present their work in one of the Symposia or Workshops
should get in contact directly with the conveners, who would decide
about acceptance. Because space available in each Symposium or Workshop
is limited, interested participants should get in contact as soon as
possible with the respective conveners, instead of waiting for the
final call for papers. Contributions not considered suitable for
specialized Symposia or Workshops will be accommodated in General
Sessions, which are open to oral and poster presentations dealing with
global subjects.

CONGRESS EXCURSION
The sea is a basic and fundamental element of Galician culture.
Accordingly, it has been thought that it would be of interest to the
participants of the Congress that the same be made aware of the variety
of Galicia's coastal ecosystems, the high productivity of its tidal
estuaries, and its fishing communities. The tour will begin in a
typical Galician ecosystem where will be observed habitats
characteristic of the numerous mammal species native to the region,
such as Galemys pyrenaicus, Lutra lutra, Microtus lusitanicus, Arvicola
sapidus, Talpa occidentalis, Sorex granarius, Crocidura suaveolens,
Neomys anomalus, Apodemus sylaticus, and Canis lupus. Then we will
embark onto a ship in Vigo, destination: Cies Islands, a protected
natural park where interesting fauna may be observed, including the
world's largest colony of Yellow legged Gull (Larus cachinas); it also
may be possible to observe some cetaceans and pinnipeds. Upon returning
from the islands, we will disembark at Combarro, a small fishing
village of extraordinary beauty (indeed, it is considered by many to be
the most beautiful of all Galicia). The nearby shores have the largest
concentration of "horreos" (stone corn granaries). After Combarro, we
will visit the Monastery of Poio and will enjoy fresh sardines,
octopus, and Galician "empanada" (cake made with vegetables and sea
food or meat). We then will return to Santiago de Compostela.

. o O | SIGHTSEEING IN SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA | O o .
+...........................................+
The city of the apostle is full of historical buildings and other
tourist attractions and is thus the ideal for a quiet unhurried walk of
discovery of street, squares and nooks. The Obradoiro Square, one of
the most beautiful of its kind in the world, lies at the very heart of
the city, and contains an extraordinary collection of monuments,
including the Cathedral, Gelmirez Palace, the Hostelry of the Catholic
Monarchs, Rajoy Palace and the Collage of San Jeronimo. Santiago de
Compostela offers many cultural activities, museums and there are
frequent exhibitions held at art galleries.
Santiago de Compostela provides an excellent selection of restaurants
where the traveler can enjoy all Galician cooking: seafood and fish,
meet, the best local wines and, for desert, the typical Compostelan
almond tart. The street of the old quarter abound in bodegones
(taverns) where its tapas and snacks can't be missed.
The most important festivals are in July to honor the Apostle James; on
the night of the 24th, the Mudejar Face, on Obradoiro Square, is set
alight and there is a great fireworks display. The following day is the
festivity of the patron saint and also the "Day of the Galician
Homeland". A traditional and solemn service is held on the Cathedral
with a mass, choirs and hornpipes. This is one of the occasions when
the "botafumeiro" censer is swung by the so-called "tiraboleiros".
During the second fortnight in July there is a Folklore festival which
brings together bands and groups from all over Galicia, and there are
concerts of every kind, theatrical performances, open-air cinema shows,
"gigantes y cabezudos" (enormous figures with large heads), and popular
fairs. Every thursday is Market day, when farmers and stockmen gather
together in the city.
