Pattern Recognition Software

Our stream survey unit counts anadromous fish redds in the American River.
We are interested in adapting pattern recognition software to conduct the
preliminary review from aerial photographs.  We have an otolith analysis
project (Mac-based) and wonder whether any leaf, cell, or root recognition
software may be able to differentiate quasi-circular areas on stream bottoms
from B/W aerial phtotgraphs. We would prefer a Windows-based solution.   Any
comments would be appreciated.
