Tree remains

Some weeks ago, I found along the coast in Gaspe Peninsula, a big rock
fallen off the cliff (made of brittle conglomerate) at the surface of
which was visible an embedded tree trunk (ca. 1,75 m long X 10 cm
diam.).

I've taken off (very easily) a few pieces of coal (or charcoal ?).
I am wondering what can be done concerning the determination of the taxa
and the age of the remains.

Any suggestions ?
