We invite you to submit your abstract electronically, either mailed on a
floppy  disc or sent via electronic mail.  Abstracts may also be submitted
as hard copy, and instructions for both are printed below.

Abstracts must be received no later than 10 February.   To insure maximum
participation, only one scientific presentation per person will be allowed.
An individual may be listed as co-author on more than one abstract, but
senior authorship is limited to only one contributed paper, poster, or
symposium paper.

Because only a limited number of oral presentations can be scheduled,
presentation of posters is strongly encouraged.  Some authors may also be
asked to present posters rather than oral presentations.  Abstracts that
are received by the deadline will be given first choice for presentation in
an oral contributed session.

NOTE:  Paper copies of abstracts will be accepted only if you document that
you have no computer access.  Contact OTS Office, Apartado 676-2050, San
Pedro, San Jose, Costa Rica, for instructions for written abstract
submission.

Acceptance of an abstract for presentation will be based on evidence that
the paper will include new and specific information.  Abstracts should not
contain information that was presented at a previous ATB meeting or
published in a journal. Abstracts should include a statement of objectives,
a brief description of methods used, a concise presentation of the actual
results obtained, and a summary of conclusions drawn.  Statements such as
"Results will be discussed" will result in rejection.

Accuracy and appearance of the abstract is the responsibility of the
author. Abstracts may be returned to the authors without being revised if
they do not comply with the guidelines. Authors are therefore encouraged to
pay particular attention to the guidelines for preparation of the abstract
given below.

Poster sessions have become increasingly popular and are suitable for all
types of presentations, especially those involving complex charts, tables,
maps, or detailed photographs that cannot be evaluated when shown briefly
on a screen.  Posters offer an excellent opportunity for extended informal
discussion and active participation by coauthors.

All poster titles and abstracts will be published in the meeting program.
We expect that posters will be displayed for three days, with the authors
available for discussion during a 2-hour period during one day.  Further
instructions on presenting posters will be sent to the authors by the
program chairperson after acceptance of the abstract.

All oral contributed papers will be scheduled at 15-minute intervals; the
presentation should therefore be limited to 10 - 12 minutes.  Questions and
discussion are vital to the success of the annual meeting, but are not
possible without the cooperation of the speaker.

Speakers in oral sessions will receive notification of day, time, and
location of their presentation and instructions on how to prepare their
session from the session chairperson. Authors who send in abstracts via
electronic mail will be notified of receipt of the abstract electronically.
Authors who send in abstracts via floppy disks should include a self-
addressed postcard along with the original and copies of the abstract if
they wish notification of receipt.  Do not send a second postcard for
notification of the day, time, and location for presentations. Authors will
receive this information from the session chairperson.

Before submitting an abstract, authors should be confident that they will
attend the meeting.  Withdrawal of an accepted paper or poster creates
problems in planning the meeting. Therefore, presenting authors of accepted
abstracts should send their registration fee for the meeting by 10 March.
If the author is not registered by that date, the abstract will not be
included on the program.  Please inform the program or session chairperson
immediately if cancellation is necessary after that date.

ALWYN GENTRY AWARD FOR BEST STUDENT PAPER
In recognition of the contributions of this singular scientist, mentor, and
teacher, ATB has established the Alwyn Gentry Award for Best Student Paper
presented at the annual meeting.  Students who would like their posters or
oral presentations considered for this award should indicate on their
submitted abstract.  Students should be the first author on the paper and
should be reporting substantially their own work.

Instructions for Preparing Abstract

ASCII TEXT VERSION  Abstracts, inclusive of citation and text, are to be no
more than 230 words.  They can be submitted on a 3.5" floppy disk
(formatted for DOS, MAC, or UNIX-based machines), or via electronic mail.
Abstracts must be submitted in ASCII text. Abstracts submitted using
word-processing packages will be unacceptable and will be returned.
Include at the top of the file the same information requested for paper
versions.

The format shown in the example below should be followed exactly. In
particular:
A) Use all capital letters for all authors' names, the state abbreviation,
and the country.
B) For the first author, list the last name first, then the first name and
initial. For any other authors, type first name, middle initial, last name
(and use all caps).
C) Include the name of the institution but not the department affiliation
and street address.  Without skipping a line or moving to a new line, type
the title of the presentation.
D) Skip a line before beginning the text of the abstract.
E) Do not indent any part of the abstract itself. The abstract should be a
single paragraph.
=46) As ASCII text does not allow for special symbols or fonts, we ask that
you hold them to a minimum in your abstract.  When necessary, bracket your
special needs with the following symbols. We will search and replace with
appropriate text.
