How about the "Cadfael" series that appeared a few years back on Public TV?
He was a monk who served as physician for his community and maintained an
herbarium (in the original sense of the term) from which he selected plants
to prepare medications. He could identify plants and used his skills to
solve murders by detecting and ID'ing plant remains in and around the
victim. The stories are published in one paperback volume.
