taxonomy vs ethics

In response to Tom Lammers response to ... I recently heard/saw
a talk show in which the local animal rights person was giving
his viewpoint.  The local chapter's stated belief was that they
only considered animals "with nervous systems" because it was
the nervous system that responded to stimuli.  Where do they
draw the line with respect to a "nervous system" when it comes
to some of the lower animals.  Further it seems to me that some
of the treatments that pets receive probably should be classified
as cruelty (e.g., birds in cages).  It's got nothing to do with
being alive.
Didn't mean to continue this drivelous topic but couldn't resist.
