The operative phrase is found in your boss' memo:

        "in any case, there is a reason for using ii."

The reason is, it is mandated by the ICBN - he can't ignore the
ICBN simply because there are different rules in micro and zoo.  Until
the ICBN is revised, it must be followed if one wishes to make sure that
nomenclature is correctly presented.  If he wishes to change the ICBN, he
is perfectly free to propose such a change to the appropriate committee.
Until such time as a change is made, his single i usage is incorrect!
