Dear Joseph,
            I think it is absolutely preposterous that things have gone
so far. Academically discussing botanical vs zoological mores is one
thing, but taking unilateral measures like you describe is totally
another matter. Is your boss aware that he is risking isolation and
widespread distrust about databases in his charge? I cannot believe what
you tolds us. There is a worldwide movement for ensuring compatibility of
authority files etc. and your boss is taking such measures!!!  You did
the right thing and I do hope reason will prevail.
