opening dictionaries

You may wish to interpret the ICZN discussion in that way. Here's how I
would interpret it...

Many ICZN discussants argued for an immutable spelling of taxonomic names.
This argumentation had not to do with the time spent in dictionaries
but with their concern over having one less element of ambiguity to
track and resolve during the sometimes tortuous history of recombinations
of names. They fully appreciated the nature of language, gender/case/number,
and the value of dictionaries; those were **just** not the issue.
