As an avid fan of both Gene Roddenberry and J.R.R. Tolkien, I fail to see
how the two are mutually exclusive. There are botanists in both, as worthy
of epinomy as any more mundane botanist: Meriadoc Brandybuck (author of
"Herblore of the Shire") and Keiko O'Brian (a charming resident of Deep
Space 9 who's been botanizing on the planet Bejor for years).
Actually, what I really like to see is a Cosmos saganii (after
astronomer Carl Sagan).
