Position:  Curatorial Assistant I

Required Education, Experience and Skills:  College degree with specialized
courses pertaining to the taxonomy of vascular plants and to
herbarium/museum collections preferred; word processing skills and
familiarity with data entry; previously related experience a plus.  Strong
interpersonal skills required.

Duties and Responsibilities:  Harvard University Herbaria.  Reports to the
Manager of the Systematics Collections.  Assists with general curation of
the vascular plant collections, including processing of loans and exchanges;
filing newly acquired specimens and specimens returned from loan.  Performs
clerical functions connected with the exchange and lending of specimens and
preparation of specimens for the herbarium, including label preparation,
data entry, filing and record-keeping.  Serves as a source of information to
visiting scholars, students, other University departments and the public.
Answers correspondence related to the collection; performs some routine
identifications.  Performs related job duties as required.

Salary Range: $18,500 - 22,500.

The Harvard University Herbaria, which house some 5 million specimens, are
located on the campus of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The vascular plant collections are particularly rich in early New World
material (the legacy of Asa Gray, B. L. Robinson, M. L. Fernald and others)
as well as early and recent collections from East Asia and the Malesian
region.   The Herbaria building also houses 3 recently renovated
laboratories for molecular research as well as teaching facilities.  The
living collections of the Arnold Arboretum are located in Boston,
approximately 6 miles away.  Research interests of the staff include both
molecular and morphological systematics, angiosperm phylogeny, comparative
morphology, ecology and evolution of tropical trees, and the floras of
several areas of the world, especially China and Indonesia.  For additional
